We haven’t heard much from the famous duo Sugarland this past year, so Jennifer Nettles  could get ready for the birth of her son, and now she’s back to work — but not with her partner, Kristian Bush. Nettles has revealed that she is currently working on her first solo album.

The ‘Baby Girl’ songstress is working with famed rock producer Rick Rubin — who also helped Johnny Cash’s late-career comeback — and she’s been collaborating with songwriters including Sara Bareilles and Butch Walker. Rubin has also paired her with a diverse collection of musicians whose backgrounds are grounded more in rock and alternative music, including Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

“This album is different than what I’ve done before,” Nettles tells Rolling Stone. “What I do with Sugarland, primarily it’s stuff that starts with me and Kristian writing together. It’s fun to play with that masculine energy, but for this I wanted to do something really personal — more intimate and emotional.”

Rubin has been trying to get away from the slick audio perfection that characterizes most contemporary commercial releases by having the musicians play live in the same room together, instead of tracking their parts separately. He says the music they have made encompasses not only country, but also jazz, soul, island rhythms and even classic rock.

Nettles believes the album — which is tentatively slated for release in the fall — will please fans of Sugarland, but also appeal to wider audience. “It’s a celebration of my roots, and where I am today,” she states. “I’m a different version of myself than what people might have known before – not only in my songwriting and performance, but even in the sounds on this album. It reflects a more soulful, grittier life. A lot has been lived in the time between the last record I made and now, and you can hear that.”

Trace Adkins return  to ‘Celebrity Apprentice All-Stars’ paid off in a huge way, as he was “hired” by host/executive producer Donald Trump in Sunday night’s heated competition against fellow finalist, Penn Jillette, winning the show.

The singer, who wanted to win ‘Apprentice’ for the Red Cross after the loss of his own house  in a devastating fire, certainly accomplished what he intended, snagging a whopping $250,000 for his charity. Throughout the season, the singer raised a total of $1,554,072 for the Red Cross.
Jillette returned the compliment, adding, “Trace looks wonderful onstage. He can really get people jumping around. There’s energy there in music, you know, no one ever danced to Houdini. There could not be a harder opponent who has dignity, who has respect for other people, and Trace is all of those things.”As fans of the show know, unlike some finalists, Adkins and Jillette both demonstrated a huge amount of admiration for one another. “Penn Jillette has dignity and integrity. He’s intelligent and played a clean game,” the country star said (quote via Reality TV World). “It’s hard to argue with Penn’s record… if I’m going to lose, I’m going to lose to the best. And by God, he’s the best.”

The live two-hour ‘All-Star Celebrity Apprentice’ finale included Adkins performing his song ‘Love Will’ accompanied by Jillette on the bass guitar. Their final task came down to the their performance and success designing their own ice cream flavor for Walgreens’ DeLish brand, which was accompanied by a video ad and an ice cream social to promote the sweet treat.

“Going into this last task, I think I delivered the best ice cream, I made the best commercial, I put on the best show, I brought in the biggest celebrities, and I raised the most money,” the ‘You’re Gonna Miss This’ hitmaker stated.

While Penn’s ice cream flavor was a better seller than Adkins’, Trump judged them not only on their final task, but also their overall job on ‘Apprentice, deeming Adkins the star of the show in the end.

It was certainly a season worth celebrating, as this year’s competition raised more money for charity than any previous edition of the NBC reality show — something worth applauding.

Series star Hayden Panettiere, who plays country ingenue Juliette Barnes to Connie Britton’s veteran Rayna James, tweeted her excitement about the show’s renewal and her chance to sink her teeth into her character for another season.

It was a busy couple days for TV networks, which were slashing their schedules, canceling shows and ordering pilots while preparing for the upfronts. ABC’s ‘Nashville,’ which follows the lives of two country signers (one established and one up-and-comer), has been renewed for a second season.

She posted: “NASHVILLE SEASON 2!!!! I’ve finally finished jumping up and down on the bed with excitement! Ahhhh!!!”

The actress has reason to be exited, since the show’s fate was not certain. The series was reportedly in jeopardy, with the threat of cancellation looming large since it opened to healthy ratings but saw subsequent dips throughout its debut season. Still, the network has faith in the show and is giving it the go  for a second season.

So there will be plenty more musical drama unfolding on the small screen and likely more soundtracks.

Tune into the Season 1 finale, where Brad Paisley makes a guest appearance. The episode airs May 22. Be sure to tune in next season, as well.

Canceled. That’s the status of Reba McEntire’s  new sitcom ‘Malibu Country,’ which aired on Friday nights on ABC. The network has nixed the half-hour show after just one season on the air.
In the series, McEntire played singer Reba MacKenzie who uprooted her family and transplanted it to Malibu after her country music star husband was caught cheating on her. While in sunny So Cal, she attempted to resurrect her own career, all the while raising two teenagers who were facing a different type of peer pressure due to living in the region.Multiple sources have reported the show’s cancelation.

The laughs also came from watching her deal with her cranky, “tell it like it is” live-in mother, played by comedienne Lily Tomlin, and her airheaded, blonde bombshell neighbor.

In addition to starring on the show, McEntire executive produced alongside her husband, Narvel Blackstock.

‘Malibu Country’ was the fiery singer’s return to scripted television, but it was not nearly as successful as her first show. Her eponymous series ‘Reba’ ran from 2001 through 2007 on both the WB and the CW.

ABC had announced that ‘Malibu Country’ was the highest rated freshman comedy of the fall 2012 season at one point, averaging 8.7 million viewers an episode. But the network still declined to order a second season.

Country music has lost one of its all-time-greatest icons, as legendary singer George Jones died Friday (April 26) at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. He was hospitalized on April 18 with a fever and irregular blood pressure.

Born September 12, 1931, Jones is undeniably one of the most important and influential singers in the history of American popular music. His five decades of enduring classics included ‘She Thinks I Still Care,’ ‘The Grand Tour,’ ‘Walk Through This World With Me,’ ‘Tender Years’ and ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today,’ which is is widely regarded as one of the greatest country songs of all time.

Jones had recently embarked on what was to be his farewell tour, appropriately dubbed the Grand Tour. The celebration of his storied career was planned to wrap up with an all-star farewell concert on Nov. 22 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, for which Jones had already announced a jaw-dropping array of guest stars as a testament to his enduring musical legacy.

Jones is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Nancy Jones, his sister Helen Scroggins, and by his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

There are many country music artists who are reeling from the recent tragic explosion in West, Texas at the West Fertilizer Co. It hits especially close to home for the iconic Willie Nelson, as the accident happened in a town six miles south of his hometown of Abbott, Texas. The legend taking action and turning his 80th birthday celebration into a benefit concert for the West Volunteer Fire Department.

He tells CMT, ”West is like our backyard. It’s where I grew up. I road my bike from Abbott to West and back all the time on that road where all this stuff happened.”

“There are a lot of our friends and loved ones and neighbors down there. We talked to some of them and some of them made it out
The Country Music Hall of Fame member tweeted the information about the benefit concert, saying, ”The previously scheduled concert on 4/28 at @thenewbackyard will now benefit West VFD. Details to come soon.”OK, and some of them didn’t,” he adds. “But they’re strong and they’ll be back. It’s one of those things you don’t get over. But you will get through it.”

Nelson is rallying his whole Family band for the show, and they’re working together to create some hope. “I’ll be there, and my son Lukas, my son Micah and daughters Paula and Amy,” the icon says. “We’ll all be there doing a benefit show now. Until today, it was set up as a birthday show. But since the West tragedy happened, we decided to start a benefit there and let other people join in. If they want to donate to the West Volunteer Fire Department, they can do so. That’s where our proceeds are going to go on that day.”

It certainly is a shocking and horrific tragedy. The latest in the West, Texas explosion updates is that 35 people are believed to have been killed, and that number includes five members of the West Volunteer Fire Department, four EMS workers and an off-duty Dallas firefighter who pitched in to help. The search for survivors continues, although the outcome appears bleak.

All of the actions that people are taking — including Nelson’s thoughtful concert on April 28 — are working to send love and support to the tiny town of West.

George Jones was admitted to a local Nashville hospital for observation today (April 18). During a routine checkup, Mr. Jones was running a slight fever with irregular blood pressure.

This weekend’s shows in Atlanta, Ga. and Salem, Va. have been postponed. Information on the rescheduling of these concerts will be available soon. For more information on George Jones, please visit georgejones.com
